One of the historic streets of Olsztyn and the site of the first, beautiful tenement houses built in the town.
The street had its name changed multiple times: it was known as Wartenburger Strasse (Barczewska) until 1904, whereupon it was renamed Kaiser Strasse (Cesarska). Then, after the war it was renamed to ulica Stalina, only to be changed to ulica Dąbrowszczaków in 1956. In 2017 it briefly bore the name of Erwin Kruk, a Mazurian writer, before finally reverting to ulica Dąbrowszczaków. Olsztyn’s tram route no. 1 used to run along the street until 1965.
Ulica Dąbrowszczaków is lined many by beautiful tenement houses, but two stand out in particular. One is Villa Fortuna – the first tenement house in 20th-century Olsztyn, built in 1900-1901 and owned by Otto Naujack – an entrepreneur, factory owner, rentier and brickyard owner. The second is the Naujack Tenement House (Kamienica Naujacka), an art nouveau tenement house erected in 1907 and 1908, also by Otto Naujack. The building is now referred to as “the little palace” by Olsztyn residents. It also served as the seat of the Provincial Office of Public Security after the war.
