The Kętrzyn castle of the Teutonic Knights dates from the second half of the 14th century.
It is rectangular in plan and originally had three wings, built around the courtyard. The edifice was encased within a defensive wall with three towers and an entrance gate leading out to the town. The castle and the adjacent manor farm included a kitchen, a brewery, a mill, a bakery, a granary, a pantry, an armoury, a gunpowder magazine, a chapel and a prison.
Between 2018 and 2020 the castle underwent its most extensive restoration effort in the last century, which is why new photos of the castle post-restoration have been added. The ruined tower and the southern/eastern defensive walls were rebuilt as part of the effort.
