Karwica Mazurska is a tiny settlement (as of recently, home to just 15 residents) located in the Ruciane-Nida Commune, Pisz Poviat, within the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship. It lies along the Olsztyn-Ełk railway line, between the station and national road 58, on the route between Ruciane-Nida and Pisz.
The village originated as a railway settlement with the 1884 commissioning of the Allenstein (Olsztyn) to Lyck (Ełk) railway line, at which time the station bore the German name Kurwien. After World War II, the area became part of Poland; the station was renamed Karwica Mazurska (effective 1 February 1947), while the original village of Karwica became a separate entity.
Today, the railway station is a near-deserted settlement with remnants of railway service buildings. The former station building no longer exists, demolished in the mid-1980s. Nearby stand two semi-detached railway houses, once accommodating forestry and railway workers. The village itself was featured in an episode of the classic TV series “Dom” (Home), and was also used as a filming location for the film “Azyl” (Asylum) in 1978.
A quintessential example of a small, obscure landmark etched into Mazury’s landscape, this forgotten station served as a transport point for nearly 50 years.
