Church of St. Nicholas and observation tower in Elbląg – 13th century

The origins of the church date back to the mid-13th century, which saw the construction of a rectangular chancel and 5 bays of the main body. Over two centuries, the church was gradually expanded, which brought a twofold change in the spatial plan (the originally-towerless hall became a basilica after the addition of a steeple and the elevation of the nave, only to revert to a hall design after the aisles were also elevated). The 97 m tall steeple makes it one of the highest churches in Poland.
