Warmian buildings in Kaborno – 19th century

A Warmian wooden “chata” (meaning a hut or a cottage) is a country house made of wood, typical of the Warmia region. The interior of Warmian chatas usually consisted of 4 to 6 rooms, depending on the size of the house and affluence of its owners. The “black kitchen” (chimney) usually stood at the centre of the cottage, and was ringed by the other rooms.

The entryway was usually accessed from the side of the yard. Chata windows were decorated with blue or maroon shutters. Warmian chatas are distinguished from Mazurian ones by their greater architectural intricacy and variety of forms (such as arcade cottages).
