The last of the triad of film stories showcasing famous Mazurian and Warmian families (SPUŚCIZNA, ŻURAWSCY Z KAJN). “The history of the Pieniężny family, and the Gazeta Olsztyńska (“The Olsztyn Gazette”) published by the Pieniężnys, is a fascinating one, and deserves an in-depth and insightful documentary that explores the paradoxes and complexities of our history.”, said the experts and the Inspection Committee of the Warmia-Masuria Film Fund.
The Pieniężny family was an unusual marriage of Seweryn Pieniężny, who came from Greater Poland, and Joanna Liszewska, a born Warmian. Seweryn Pieniężny came to Olsztyn to help develop the Gazeta Olsztyńska and support the then editor Jan Liszewski, Joanna’s brother, in publishing duties. Seweryn Pieniężny and Joanna Liszewska ended up marrying and taking over the publishing house from Jan Liszewski, who was by that time in declining health. Over the next two generations, the Pieniężnys ran a publishing enterprise that contributed much to the pro-Polish activities in Warmia. Not only that, some members of this family also served in Polish diplomatic and intelligence services.
