The gate is the only remnant of the defensive walls once surrounding the town, and has become the most distinctive and iconic landmark of Elblag. A viewing platform was added to one of the top floors as part of a renovation effort. Open from May to September, the deck provides visitors with a full view of the Old Town.
The construction began in 1319. The top part was built up to its current height throughout 1420–1430. A clock was hung in 1639, financed entirely by merchant Isaak Spiering, and afterwards repaired and replaced multiple times. Since 1755, a Baroque-style spire, funded by Elbląg’s citizens, has topped the roof of the Gate.
The gate is guarded by a statue of the legendary baker-boy, who saved the city from the Teutonic Knights.
