These locks link the northern Lake Bełdany (part of the vast lake chain extending all the way to Mikołajki and Giżycko) with Lake Guzianka Mała and, further on, with Lake Nidzkie. This is a crucial passage for sailors and motorboat operators, enabling vessels to navigate the 2-meter difference in water levels.
The original Guzianka Lock was built in the 1870s, when East Prussia was heavily engaged in developing its network of waterways. Its purpose was not only to facilitate the transport of timber and goods, but also to serve tourists, as Mazury had already become a popular summer destination.
Over time, the lock became so congested that queues of yachts lasting several hours would form during high season. This ultimately prompted the decision to construct a new facility in the 21st century, which was christened Guzianka Lock II and opened in 2020. Thus, Ruciane-Nida now boasts two waterlocks:
- Guzianka I – the historic, manually-operated lock, attended by lockkeepers. Measuring 44 meters in length and 7.5 in width, its massive wooden gates and steel mechanisms represent a historical monument of hydraulic engineering.
- Guzianka II – the modern, fully automated facility, built with concrete. Its main purpose is to relieve the traffic from the historic lock, especially during peak season.
Transit usually takes 15–20 minutes. In the months of July and August, the lock is in constant operation from dawn till dusk.
