Elbląg’s Architecture

Elbląg was established in 1237, making it one of the oldest cities of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship. The city and its rich architecture were virtually obliterated during the WWII military operations of 1945. The Old Town area has been since reconstructed, following the original building plan but with some modifications to the architecture – a method dubbed ‘retroversion’. On the other hand, many buildings outside of the Old Town have been spared, still maintaining the city’s medieval layout in the present day. The best preserved buildings date from the 19th century.
