The Museum in Elbląg was established in 1954 on the grounds of a former Teutonic Castle dating back to the 15th century. It is the oldest museum in the region of Warmia & Mazury and one of the most interesting cultural institutions of northern Poland, boasting a collection of some 115,000 items. The museum is located in the centre of the Old Town, in the eastern building of the castle grounds and the western building (the Gymnasium). These historic buildings stand within the castle bailey (northern boroughs), a relic of the former layout and structures of the Teutonic complex. Both buildings feature exhibits collected over a period of 150 years from the nearby archaeological sites, including the medieval old town, the former Viking trading settlement of Truso, and the Gothic necropolis in Weklice.
